We have done tours like this all over England never before have we done a free tour that was actually free ! rnOur guide (Fraser) explained how the guides do this because they love York. rnIt showed how much he loved the city by the knowledge and variety of stories he had on hand. rnOur group had Americans, Australians and Brits so history was explained at a level we could all follow. rnLots of funny stories my favourite was about the penguin on the Minster ! rnIts advertised as 2 hours and our tour was just five minutes short of that but we could happily have went on much longer. rnWe seen the walls the Minster the Shambles a multi angled tower and learned the origin of lots of words which was great. rnThank you to all your guides for doing this.

Brilliant tour yesterday with John. Kindly picked me up on the Roman Walls and I joined the group on a brilliant tour of this beautiful city. John was so knowledgeable and guided us at a lovely pace around York. I especially appreciated all of the little ‘behind the scenes’ info on York’s incredible history. And a look inside Bedern (?) Hall – bonus! Would definitely do this tour again, and will recommend to friends.

Our Tour Guide, John, was excellent. Full of really interesting history and facts about York. Took us to places we would never have found on our own. Thoroughly enjoyable walk for more than two and a half hours, so longer than we thought and so even better. I would highly recommend this walking experience and would certainly join again next time we are in York. Thank you John, we are so grateful to you for giving up your own time to volunteer and show us around your beautiful City. Kind regards, Chris and Barry

A friend and I visited York for the very first time in October 2022 and were looking for a tour to get an intro to the city. We were lucky enough to meet Nick, a local extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide who took our little group around his hometown for about 2 hrs, telling us about his city history and sharing interesting anecdotes that we’ll never forget. The time flew and we could have continued for 2 hours more! What’s more, he spoke very clearly which made it easier for us two (non native speakers) to follow the tour. rnThank you so much Nick for such a wonderful experience and for sharing the love for your hometown with us. Keep it up!rnCiao from Venice-Italy

My husband and I are history buffs who’ve walked with many dozens of local guides over five decades of world travel. Our visit today with Mick Popka was absolutely one of the best. His knowledge is broad and deep, his delivery is clear. He answers all questions and links them to relevant aspects of the tour. But what really stands out is his engaging and personal style’he speaks authentically as a ‘local’ who clearly loves his city and its heritage. We didn’t just learn about the Roman Wall, Viking invasions and the dissolution of the monasteries’we got a deep understanding of how all these players and events shaped the development of the City and the people who live here. Fabulous guide! Fabulous tour.

In all my years of travelling and touring both in the UK and overseas this was almost certainly the best tour I have ever had.rnMick Popka our guide was both knowlegable and informative about the history of York and history in general.rnMe and my wife are now both educated in the journey that the city of York has taken from the early Roman inhabitants to present day.rnWe both feel very privilged that we were able to take this free tour with Mick and wish to put it on record that he is a credit not only to the Association of Voluntary Guides but a credit to the great city of York as well.rnThankyou for sharing your abundant knowledge with us and we wish you all the best for the future.

We did the tour of York with Kevin today and it was by far the best tour of any city that we’ve ever done. Kevin was extremely knowledgeable, personable and fun to walk the city with. This organization is very cool and there should be more like it, as it is a great way to preserve and pass on the history of such a beautiful town. I would without a doubt recommend you book this tour, don’t hesitate!

Richard was a really fine guide with lots of information, history and insight. Covered a LOT of history in a little over 2 hours but was clear and didn’t try to be funny when not appropriate. I can’t imagine why anyone coming to York for the first (or fifth!) time wouldn’t start with this excellent tour. rn

A wonderful afternoon on the tour. Hosted by Richard A, we weren’t sure what to expect but this was just what was needed. I’ve been to York on a few occasions but never really known the exact history behind the different areas. Richard was excellent at telling the story of York and bringing it to life. Clearly passionate about the city and well worth doing. You’ll get to find out so much and have an enjoyable couple of hours.

Four of us took the 1.15 tour with Mike. It was a very hot day and the wall walk was wisely omitted, but we didn’t feel the lack as we learned so much about the history of this wonderful city. Mike is a very knowledgeable guide with a delightful sense of humour and we felt we had seen many aspects of the city we would otherwise have missed. I can’t recommend the tour highly enough- thank you Mike!
Jenny Holliday

We went on a tour this afternoon, guided by Nick. There were about 15 of us in total, including 2 dogs and a baby in a pushchair. Nick was so interesting and informative and took us to places that we hadn’t realised were there. The 2 hours 30 minutes seemed to fly by!rnWe highly recommend a tour from these guys.rnThank you so much.

Our superb tour guide was Mr. Mick Popka. He did an outstanding job with a group of about 15 of us. My favorite part was that Mick was so informative. This was not a \dqthere’s a tower over there, it’s old,\dq but rather more in-depth with information. We went to York SPECIFICALLY because of its history, so we LOVED all the information and how he delivered it. He also answered our questions about where to eat local dishes and which pubs might be nice to visit on a certain day / time. We would most definitely recommend a tour of York by Mick!
Keith Folse
Really enjoyed our tour thus morning thank you to our guide Frasier who obviously loves the city as he knew so much about it and was able to tell us lots of really interesting stories. rnHe spoke to everyone between the stops to find out about what brought us to York and managed to introduce us to others in the group through shared interests.rnReally great tour so much to see was very surprised at the end when our guide would not take a tip this \dqfree\dq tour Really is free unlike so many others we have been on when they do a hard sell at the end looking for something.rnCan’t recommend this tour highly enough.

Just spent a very enjoyable 2 hours being guided by Liz. She is a charming and knowledgeable guide and led us skilfully through the streets of York. She is quite rightly proud of her adopted city. Thank you Liz for an outstanding tour. We loved it. rn

I’d strongly recommend a tour from the AVG to orient you to York both for the landmarks but also the history. Wendy was able to answer our group’s questions and clearly has a great store of knowledge about York, its history, and its people. You can tell she loves bringing people around and sharing York with them. We were only in the city for two nights on a trip from the US and the tour and Wendy’s detailed information was a wonderful way to experience York. rn

Visiting York for the first time for a long weekend with my partner, we planned to take this tour to get an overview of the city and its history. This is exactly what happened, but we were actually not expecting such an interesting guided tour, given for free. Our guide Neil is really passionate about the city, extremely knowledgeable and managed to make us feel like the tour had lasted one hour less! Highly recommended, even for people who know York already!

Mick was terrific rnHe may lose a noun but that was easily remedied!rnPlease thank him for telling us about General Wolfe’s mother and the pub
