Visitor Feedback & Reviews
Steve the tour guide from start to finish of our walk today was very knowledgeable, patient and informative of the city of York. His historical accounts helped both me and my wife to picture how it was then within Roman, Viking, tutor and victoriana times in York. Would very highly recommend people visiting York to attend and although totally free of charge would ask people to please contribute some money whatever they can afford to this volunteer initiative.

We live in the York area and booked to join a walking tour In June. It was fascinating, in fact nothing else would have induced us to walk through York in torrential rain for 2 hours. Thank you Alan, we feel both entertained and much better informed.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our free walking tour with AVG! Richard, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and had a wealth of great stories to keep us entertained. He was also very approachable and answered all questions with aplomb. We highly recommend the tour as a way to make sense of the immense history of York.

A couple of weeks ago we had the great pleasure of joining the walking tour around York guided by Kevin who is one of the York Association of Voluntary Guides volunteers. It was a small group of 6 people which was the perfect size for a comfortable walking pace and for the opportunity to ask all of our questions. Kevin generously shared his passion for the city and deep knowledge of facinating York and English history. I have learnt a lot about the incredible history of York during this 2 plus hours tour. rnKevin, many thanks to you for making our trip to York unforgettable! I would definitely recommend joining one of the tours offered by the AVG when you are in York.

What a wonderful tour we had with Wendy today. At each stop on the tour we were given interesting facts on the location. Time was taken to make sure we all heard and understood everything. I thought it was lovely how inclusive Wendy was as we were a mixture of ages and Nationalities she managed to chat to everyone as we walked between stops. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon. The guided walking tour of York was interesting and informative. Our guide was knowledgeable, entertaining, and quite engaging. We enjoyed her amusing asides and stories which made the history come alive. The walk was not difficult for average walkers and the terrain was easy to traverse. We had parents with a baby in a stroller and they were able to complete the enjoyable walk. So we recommend this walk for everyone. Thank you so much for providing this service for visitors to York. It is well worth the time.

We really enjoyed the tour with Debby.rnNormally a tour guide gives you interesting information. Sometimes a tour guide is a real storyteller and occasionally a tour guide is a native. Debby United all these features and made this tour unforgettable. Thank you so much.

We had a wonderful entertaining and informative tour of York with Kevin. We saw sights and gathered information on this walk which we probably would not have gotten on our own. He effortlessly led us through this beautiful city enlightening us with his knowledge while ensuring that no one was left behind. It was a great way to familiarize ourselves with the history and the layout of York. Kevin’s love of the city shone through in this tour.

We enjoyed our walking tour with Martin this morning. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the places he showed us around York. Being from the US and visiting York for the first time, Martin was very patient with our questions and understanding that we lacked the background history to fully connect to the events and information that he was giving us. We so appreciate the Mayor’s tour program in York. Thank you very much!

I recently had the pleasure of taking a tour of York with guide Ian and I have to say it was one of the best experiences. Ian was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the town, and his passion for sharing that knowledge was evident throughout the tour.rnIan took us on a journey from the medieval period all the way back to Roman times, introducing us to the fascinating legend of Legion 9 Roman and leaving us wanting to learn more about this mysterious part of York’s past. I would highly recommend Ian as a guide to anyone visiting York. Thank you, Ian, for such a great experience!

We were very fortunate to be with Mick on Easter Saturday afternoon walking tour. Absolutely brilliant. Mick was very informative, knowledgeable and funny. There was no way we would have discovered the places he took us on our own either. It was just fantastic and a brilliant introduction to the history of this amazing place. We left a little bit early as wanted to get into York Minster before closing and didn’t get chance to say thank you. Highly recommend! Maria and Gavin, Ipswich.

Our tour guide Nick, was most excellent. Remembering where each of us were from. We were Wakefield he was an almost bottomless font of information and knowledge peppered with good humour and banter. The free 2 hour tour lasted 3 hours and he was like the pied Piper picking up new interested people along the way. I can’t recommend this tour enough learnt lots and he took us to little nooks and crannies we would have never found for ourselves. Top notch dude.

Had a wonderful tour with Liz today! She is so passionate about this city. I booked this tour as I was making a stopover from London to Edinburgh, but I wish I had stayed 1 night here in this lovely city (and one less in London). Thank you for offering these beautiful walks!

Had a great tour with Keith (the architect). The tour was informative and included parts of York that I haven’t seen before and most people wouldn’t know existed.
